Windmill Baby

Windmill Baby

© 2008 Bryce Black

Momma and baby Christopher
were out in the yard
They were hanging the wash
and weeding the squash
and working mighty hard
Momma had to run to the outhouse
she said, “Baby I’ll be right back”
But the boy set off up the hill at a crawl
as soon as she turned her back, her back,
as soon as she turned her back.

Momma was back in the blink of an eye
but the boy was nowhere in sight.
She searched all over low and high
when she found him it gave her
a terrible fright
At first she couldn’t speak
then she started to shriek
“Christopher Black, get down!”
He was sittin’ up there on the windmill platform
watchin’ that wheel spin around and round
just a-watchin’ that wheel spin round

[Chorus:

He’s a born windmill baby
a natural windmill boy
He can climb up any tower
he’s his Pappy’s pride and joy
He got a tail like a monkey
and a Vise Grip in each hand
He’ll be a wind-spinnin’, water-pumpin’
bona fide windmill man oh man
a bona fide windmill man]

Papa rolled up in his pickup truck
he was tired and mighty beat
Momma said, “If yer hungry yer outa luck
You got a job to do before you can eat.”
We got a baby who’s been climbin’
on the windmill tower
ya gotta build us a fence this very hour.”
“Ah, don’t be a fool, Ma
he’s learnin wind power
so he can take my place when I’m obsolete
He’ll be a windmill baby complete”

[Chorus]

What I Need

What I Need

© 2008 Bryce Black

There’s a voice in the back of my head that I hear
Every moment that I am awake
It’s whispering softly but oh so clear
That I’ve got the right to all I can take

[Chorus:
What I need (x 4)
It’s a constant refrain running round in my brain
What I need (x 3)]

I think what I need is a roll in the hay
with the next lovely lady I see
but I ain’t got a clue, no my voice doesn’t say
why she should want
to roll with me

What I need is to win the megabucks pot
At the lottery, sweepstakes or bingo
Would wealth make me happy
Well, probably not
But at least then my pockets would jingle

[Chorus]

I need chocolate
not an awful lot
Just a pound or two a day
And a glass of wine would be mighty fine
Just to wash the blood sugar blues away

[Chorus]

What I need is a friend who’ll be true to the end
and who’ll be there each time that I call
but who won’t hassle me
I need some privacy
I mean, after all!

They say that you can’t always get what you want
but if you try you might get what you need
but I can’t get no satisfaction
while whispered desires continue to breed
What I need, what I need
ah, don’t give me no sermons ’bout greed
but I do get annoyed
when I can’t fill the void
with what I need (x 3)

Tend Yer Bones

Tend Yer Bones

I was about to cross
that dark deserted street
The stranger in the shadows there
I did not care to meet
So shabby and unshaven
and his eyes were burnin’ red
He grabbed my arm as I passed by
and this is what he said

[Chorus:
Them bones (x 3)
you got to tend your bones
The worms will have their way
when you lie beneath your stone
the veil of flesh will peel away
revealin’ bones alone
so you got to tend your bones]

He said, I bet you got a big fine house
you drive a fancy car
Yeah buddy looks
like you have got it made
and all I got’s the alley
out behind some sleazy bar
but someday we’ll be equals
in the grave

[Chorus]

In Egypt when the Pharoah died
he was wrapped up and mummified
his subjects just would turn to dust
but he would last for ages
But now the undertaker’s art
makes any stiff look fresh and smart
at least until the hole is filled
and he collects his wages

[Chorus]

Tend them bones (x 8)

Stone Goose

Stone Goose

Grey goose all alone
standing silent in the snow
all your friends have flown
and bitter winds they blow

[Chorus:
Grey goose, stay loose
You cannot fly, but what’s the use
to cry and to moan
Your wings have turned to stone]

Grey goose bow your head
burrow down and find a bed
the wild sky is too high
now you must sleep or die

[Chorus]

Grey goose cold and deep
dreams may heal you while you sleep
When returning honkers sing
you’ll waken and take wing

[Chorus]

Sheer Caffeine

Sheer Caffeine

Alarm clock squawking at the break of day
My eyes won’t open but I need that pay
My plugs won’t fire and my idle’s too lean
Gonna have to make it on sheer caffeine

[Chorus:
Sheer caffeine, sheer caffeine
Might give you the jitters and make you mean
If you can’t get up a head of steam
You’re gonna have to make it on sheer caffeine]

Somehow I am able
to stumble to the table
where I fumble for the label
and I open the can
That earthy brown aroma
could wake me from a coma
As it fills my humble home
I wait with cup in hand
for

[Chorus]

All across the nation
The sound of percolation
fills the air in preparation
for another day
Perpetually tired
employees getting wired
out of fear of getting fired
if they do not say
YES to

[Chorus]

Way down in parts Latino
where they grow that coffee bean-o
some starvin’ campesino’s
sweatin’ as he picks
to keep the wheels of commerce turnin’
all the spendin’ and the earnin’
depend on gringos yearnin’
for their daily fix
of…

[Chorus]

Every day you got to shake it
if you cannot fake it
You’re gonna have to make it
on sheer caffeine

River

River

I spent a lifetime thirstin’
searchin’ for the river’s source
cursin’ fought the current
all upstream my course
and when I found that spring
with tremblin’ hand I filled the cup
Then the rain began and I looked up

Now the river is my lover
her every mood I long to know
Ripplin’ of her laughter
the silence deep below
She might be just a trickle
of precious bitter tears
a muddy flood, or runnin’ sweet and clear

And when my heart is achin’
and I can’t find a friend
her current will be takin’
me round another bend

The river is my mother
her waters ever giving birth
to all who drink or swim or sink
their roots into the earth
and every drop that pulses
in my veins must one day go
to mingle with her ceaseless flow

Paragon NOT

Paragon NOT

I never been a paragon of fashion
Nobody ever called me suave or dashin’
My social graces lack
the element of tact
I can’t sustain a flame of constant passion

[Chorus:
So baby, what you see is what you get
ain’t never had a lover yet
who rated me a ten
but baby I’m willin’
to try again]

I might forget to tell you that I care
I may forget to bathe and brush my hair
My cookin’s kinda grim
My bathroom is a sin
There’s bones and stones still lyin’ round my lair

[Chorus]

When it comes to dancin’ I’m a hopeless flop
As for romancin’
tell me when to stop
My timin’s not precise
but I’ll try to treat you nice
and I promise you won’t have to call a cop

[Chorus]

Mad Cow

Mad Cow

© 2008 Bryce Black

You are what you eat
but if you eat what you are
this recyclin’ thing’s gone way too far
If you’re the missing link in your own food chain
ya know that I think it’s a cryin’ shame
cuz you’ll be ravin’ while you’re dyin’
as the microscopic prions
are eatin’ little holes in your brain

[Chorus:

Mad Cow, It’s a dread disease
Somehow, it turns your brain to cheese
Right now, I hope we all agree
It seems like any fool should see
that a ruminatin’ animal
turned into a cannibal
gets spongiform encephalopathy]

One Canadian bossy came way down south
She was rollin’ her eyes and foamin’ at the mouth
neurotic, psychotic and paranoid too
in need of a shrink to talk her through
her delusions of grandeur
that all across the land her
story would be on the TV news

[Chorus]

We gonna leave that feedlot now
Ain’t got no use for an ol’ mad cow
Where the cows are all
hormone deranged
the people there are also strange

USDA say food still safe
we only found one little case
For all this fuss there’s just no base
No need to put a Mad Cow test in place
like, ’cross the Atlantic
they did, in a panic
but we can trust the marketplace

[Chorus]

Loving the Questions

Loving the Questions

(Homage to Rainer Maria Rilke)

© 2008 Bryce Black

Who, what, where, when, why and how
whither, which and whence
These little words can drive you mad
or help your life make sense
Like seeds in fertile soil sown
they sprout, take root, unfold and grow
and yield new seeds a thousandfold
the questions never end

[Chorus:

You got to love, love, love, love the questions
and be patient with your heart
Do not now try to seek the answers
you are not ready to live them out
The point is to live everything
so live the questions now
Perhaps you’ll live into the answers
someday, somehow]

Sometimes I long for answers
to quench the questions’ burning
But I am forged from wondering
alloyed with doubt and yearning
Just when the answer’s in my hand
it slips right through my fingers and
it soaks into the thirsty sand
so slowly I’ve been learning

[Chorus]

Some folks think faith is a medicine
to be swallowed every day
or facts you must cram for the final exam
where God gives you a grade
But I believe in the burstin’ birthin’ water
cry in the night of a
new son or daughter
and Love that loves what is
not just what ought to be
I believe in mystery

[Chorus]

Chickens

Chickens

© 2008 Bryce Black

Chickens
are really dinosaurs
I’ve studied
them while I do my chores
their eyes are beady
their legs are scaly
and their footprints belong in a museum

Chickens
ain’t hardly birds at all
they are reptiles
who strut instead of crawl
and the demand-a
for Colonel Sanders
would drop if people
knew what they was eating

Of course most scientists now think
that the dinosaurs were warm blooded
and a few even say
they are not all extinct
’cuz some of them evolved into birds

And chickens
they are the living proof
that the dinosaurs live
and that’s the truth
So why pay Spielberg
for special effects
go out to the coop
and take a good look
at Gallosaurus rex
